The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), which begins on Saturday, has evolved into the most evolved cash-rich league, promising to be bigger, better, and more exciting than ever before, with a larger pool of talented cricketers, new-look teams, addition of two new franchises, some new rules, increased number of matches, and a different format.
With the addition of two new teams, the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans, the organisers decided to hold a mega auction to give each team an equal chance to select players of their choice and build a strong team. And on the 12th and 13th of February in Bengaluru, the franchises did just that by adding some talented overseas and domestic cricketers to their sides.
As many as six teams - RCB, CSK, KKR, LSG, GT, and PBKS - will have new captains, who have either left their previous franchises or are taking up the captaincy for the first time.
To set the IPL apart from other leagues, the organisers have introduced some new rules and formats. Overall, things appear to be in order, and fans can expect an exciting season of T20 cricket.
The 15th edition of the IPL will feature 10 teams and 74 games spread over 65 days, with a new, tweaked format. In the league stage, each team will play 14 matches, but the 10 teams will be split into two groups of five.
Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, will lead Group A as the top seeds, while Chennai Super Kings, the four-time champions, will lead Group B as the second top seeds.
Group A: Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants
Group B: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans
In addition to DRS, Covid-19 allowances for teams, Super Over, and the newly-introduced MCC laws, there will be some major rule changes in the IPL 2022.
Covid-19: "Unable to field a team due to Covid for any match due to a shortage of players in the playing XI (at least seven of whom must be Indian) plus one substitute fielder." The BCCI will try to reschedule the match for later in the season at its discretion. In the event that this is not possible, the matter will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The Technical Committee's decision will be final and binding, according to a BCCI statement.
The previous rule stated that the board "will attempt to reschedule the match for a later date, but if this is not possible, the opponent team will be awarded two points."
DRS: Another addition to the playing conditions is the increase in the number of referrals (DRS) from one to two.
MCC Suggestion: The board also agreed with the Marylebone Cricket Club's (MCC) recent suggestion that the new batsman must take the strike even if the middle batsmen crossover during a catch. Notably, the law does not take effect until October of this year for international cricket. IPL, on the other hand, has decided to enforce it right away.
Super Over: If the Super Over cannot be staged after regular play time for any reason, or if subsequent Super Overs cannot be staged to break the tie, the BCCI has decided that the team that finished higher in the league table will be declared the winner.
